I was perusing Facebook recently, which I should add is an event in itself, and ran across a particularly poignant piece of prose. Which said this:

I wish more people cared about Earth as much as they cared about who they believe created it.

Not exactly an epiphany to me, but a really important statement in a throwaway tag line.

There are many people who care nought for the environment, thinking it’s all the hippie domain, treehuggers, rabid greenies and the loonies of the left. Those who don’t give two hoots about it will happily say what they think about it, loudly and proudly, and not care what anyone else thinks about it.

Yet those same people who are religious will call holy war upon you should you not offer respect for their chosen set of beliefs. And that is not the domain of any one religion here. Not extremists, not fanatics, not zealots, but everyday people who you know and talk to on a daily basis. They are intolerant to the extreme when it comes to criticism of their chosen beliefs. But they will happily berate you and tell you the “science is wrong”. Notably those saying this are eminently NOT scientists. Where do they get their ideas from one must wonder.

A relative of mine through marriage believes the words of people on radio who give their views on the subjects of climate change, ecosystems, renewable energy and sustainability as they “are very knowledgeable” and completely casts aside my viewpoints as “not being relevant”, despite my University training in these very fields. Next time that person wants my assistance for their ongoing and endless computer problems I’ll be referring them to a certain radio station. After all, they “are very knowledgeable”.

What more can I say than when you get sick, do you go to a doctor or a mechanic? Seek specialist advice from someone who knows what they are talking about. That won’t be someone who has a daily radio show I expect.
